Elisabeth Carnell
I am serious and I am whimsical. I dig history and I like to play in the mud.
My path to my present work was a meander: I had been a sculptor (bronze and steel) before an academic detour (humanities/social sciences BA and MA), then a return to art when the requirements of raising a child with disabilities necessitated letting go plans for a Ph.D. (Life happens.)
I find inspiration in nature and history, the chemistry of glaze and of peoples, the ravenous roar and crackle of a wood kiln and the angry hiss of a ^010 pot as it’s dipped in fermented yeast ooze. My artistic style is organic—my goal to complement the medium, not hide it—and my work comprises wheel-thrown and hand-built, stoneware and porcelain, steel-toed shoes and the softest of brushes, with a focus on atmospheric firing methods. And coffee. I also focus on coffee.
